After famously “Rickrolling” a group of people protesting their concert near a Baptist church in Kansas City in 2015, the band continued the fun Sunday night at Tokyo’s Summer Sonic festival.
Frontman Dave Grohl jumped right into his surprise of meeting Astley at the festival — and subsequently brought the singer on stage.
For the crowd, then, it was the ultra Rickroll. (Not the crummy kind where a YouTube video you’ re looking for returns a version of Astley’s hit, “Never Gonna Give You Up.”)
“This is f—ing crazy, ” Grohl told the audience after his introduction. “I just met him (Astley) two minutes ago.”
Then, the popular alt-rock band dove into what sounded like a cover of the’ 90s grunge anthem “Smells Like Teen Spirit.”
As it turns out, it was just a sped-up and rock-n-roll version of Astley’s 1987 single.
Mid-song, Astley even proclaims, “I’ m feeling f—ing marvelous.”
The singer was also performing separately at the Summer Sonic Festival.
As for Astley, 51, it was 30 years ago when his hit traveled up the charts, landing at No. 1 in 25 countries. He even won the 1988 Brit Award for Best British Single. By 1993, he had sold 40 million records worldwide.
This was all before his 2000s comeback, after the Rickroll movement began with the birth of YouTube.
The Foo Fighters, led by Grohl and drummer Taylor Hawkins, released their latest single, “Run, ” this June. Later that month, they announced that their next studio album, “Concrete and Gold, ” would be released Sept. 15.
