Xiaomi has been a leading brand in the VFM smartphone segment, and one of the reasons behind its success is the premium features it offers in an affordable package. While the specs of its smartphones have been evolving over the years, Xiaomi hasn’t strayed much from its design philosophy, at least for its budget devices. However, the brand now seems to have changed its strategy and is adopting new niche segments as well. According to a new report, Xiaomi is now working on a rugged smartphone, which will with IP certification for water, dust and shock resistance.

It is being speculated that the upcoming Xiaomi Mi 7 flagship smartphone will be the first from the brand to come with an IP68 rating. The smartphone is slated for an early 2018 launch and will come with a taller 18:9 display and Snapdragon 845 processor. The handset will also flaunt the same glass sandwich design as its predecessor as well as the dual camera module. As stated by the brand, if in fact the Mi 7 comes with water and dust resistance, it will come with a price tag that is on the higher side.
The brand recently launched its first selfie smartphone – the Redmi Y1 and its toned down variant, the Y1 Lite in India. Moreover, Xiaomi is also all set to launch its first wave of bezel-less smartphones, the Redmi 5, Redmi 5 Plus and Redmi Note 5, which are expected to come with 18:9 displays. According to a recent report, there is also a bezel-less variant of its flagship Mi 6 (first impressions) – the Mi 6c in works. Back in June, Xiaomi CEO Lei Jun said that a smartphone loses water-resistance once it is damaged. He also confirmed that if customers are willing to spend 20 or 30 percent extra for water-resistance, Xiaomi might consider launching a water-proof smartphone. With leading brands in the market coming out with more and more IP rated smartphones, it was only a matter of time before Xiaomi jumped on the wagon too.
