If you were bummed that Google disabled the physical button that allowed you to play and pause music on the Home Mini, you’ll be happy to know that it could be making a comeback in the near future.
The Home Mini is an affordable smart speaker that packs Google’s Assistant. Over the past few weeks, dozens of retailers have discounted the Home Mini, cutting $20 off the retail price, and also on top of that, added additional incentives. While the Google Home Mini isn’t perfect, it’s still a very good option when it comes to getting your feet wet with a smart speaker.
That being said, there have been some issues, like it being caught self-recording and also the issue of it rebooting when playing music at higher volumes. While Google was able to fix the former issue, it also did so by removing touch controls like play and pause from the device. Luckily, the firm has now restored those functions in its latest beta software, signaling it could return to the masses as a feature.
While the update does bring back the play and pause function, it does so with some changes. First, rather than just tapping the top to pause or resume music, users will now have to long press to enable the command. Furthermore, the button in the center will no longer be used, users will instead rely on long pressing the volume up and down to engage those actions. As mentioned before, the update is currently in beta and rolling out to folks who enrolled in Google’s preview program.
