Google shared its plan to launch a stripped down version of Android back during Google I/O and it is finally here. In an event in New Delhi, today, the company announced Android Go which is essentially a lighter version of Android build for entry-level devices with minimal specs.
This move from Google will surely pave way for more OEMs to launch cost-effective smartphones that give the same experience as a device with Android Oreo. Google has also tweaked out many settings and optimized the OS to the core for better performance. The devices running Android Go will have twice the space as a regular device and will run Google’s range of Go apps which include YouTube Go, Gmail Go etc. The company has also optimized other apps to give better performance and save data usage.
Google has described the Android Go experience by breaking it down into 3 components.
This Android Oreo (Go edition) experience is made up of three key components:
Apart from all this, if you’re someone living in India, you must be familiar with JioPhone. Google just ran its Assistant app on JioPhone. That’s right, Google just ran Assistant app successfully on a phone that costs less than $2o. This was probably done to show the work they have been doing to strip down Android for low-end devices. The company also announced that they’re working to bring Google Assistant to other feature phones as well.
It looks like Google is taking Android Go project seriously and we do hope it won’t be a disaster like Android One Project.
