Tom Brady is likely on his way to earning MVP honors, but he is also keeping track of his old understudy’s hot streak across the country.
Brady, 40, noted that he was impressed with San Francisco quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo’s 4-0 stretch under center for the 49ers.
“He’s done a great job. You go in there and get the opportunity to play and win games, that’s what we’re all here for,” Brady said on sports radio WEEI. “It was good to see, and good for them to beat Jacksonville (Sunday). That certainly helped us. I’m really happy for Jimmy. He’s worked really hard and it shows up when he goes out there and plays really well.”
The Patriots traded Garoppolo west earlier this season. New England drafted Garoppolo out of Eastern Illinois in the second round of the 2014 NFL draft, and he backed up Brady for three full seasons. Garoppolo has emerged in recent weeks with San Francisco, leading the team to four straight wins as he has completed 69% of his passes and thrown for as many as 381 yards in a game. His most recent win came over the Jaguars, who are bound for the playoffs in the NFC.
“I think it’s really a credit to him,” Brady said. “You do what you can with the opportunities you get. I think it’s great for any player and anyone who has been in the Patriots’ system to watch how the coaches prepare the players. There is obviously a high standard and high expectations for us any time you take the field.”
