The crash happened Jan. 4
KENT COUNTY, MI — Two weeks after he was critically injured in a crash that killed his 20-year-old son, a Sand Lake man also has died.
The funeral for 48-year-old Jerry L. Kinsey was Jan. 26 and he died Jan. 19.
His son, Joel E. Kinsey, died Jan. 4.
Jerry Kinsey was driving a vehicle east on 14 Mile Road near Wabasis Lake Avenue, with his son as a passenger, when another vehicle tried to pass them about 5 p.m. Jan. 4.
The two vehicles collided and both drivers lost control of their vehicles.
The Kinsey vehicle spun into the oncoming lane of traffic and was struck by a van.
Joel Kinsey, a 2016 graduate of Tri-County High School, died in the crash. His father was critically injured and died two weeks later at Spectrum Health Butterworth Hospital.
According to their obituaries, Joel Kinsey was a U. S. Marine who enjoyed hunting with his dogs and fishing.
Son killed, father critically injured in crash, state police say
Jerry Kinsey was a senior tool and die designer at Commercial Tool Group in Comstock Park and also loved hunting and fishing. He also owned dogs and trained them.
State police are investigating the crash.
The driver of the vehicle that tried to pass the Kinsey vehicle, 39-year-old Joseph Hanna of Sparta, had only minor injuries in the crash.
Kent County Jail records show Hanna was arrested the day of the crash, but on an unrelated incident. He is charged with a felony drug charge of operating or maintaining a laboratory.
Hanna was released Jan. 5 on a $1,000 personal recognizance bond.
