White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders said Wednesday that despite President Donald Trump’s tweet about the size of his “nuclear button,” he was aware nothing of the sort actually existed.
She was responding to a reporter’s question about the president’s Tuesday tweet in which he downplayed the size of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un’s alleged “nuclear button”:
North Korean Leader Kim Jong Un just stated that the “Nuclear Button is on his desk at all times.” Will someone from his depleted and food starved regime please inform him that I too have a Nuclear Button, but it is a much bigger & more powerful one than his, and my Button works!

“The president knows there is no actual one nuclear button?” NBC’s Kristen Welker asked. Sanders responded with a smirk, saying that “the president’s very well aware of how the process works.”
Trump’s tweet appeared to come in response to Kim’s Monday warning that he had a nuclear launch button on his desk as well as missiles that could reach the United States.
Sanders defended the president’s response as a representation of his strength and willingness to stand up for the United States. “This is a president who leads through strength, and he’s going to do that,” she said.
“He’s going to focus on everything that he can do in order to keep Americans safe, and he’s not going to be pushed around by the leader of North Korea.”
When Welker suggested that Trump’s tweet dangerously taunted a mentally unstable dictator, Sanders emphasized the need for confronting threats like those in North Korea and Iran:
“I don’t think it’s taunting for him to stand up for the people of this country. What is dangerous is to ignore the continued threats. If the previous administration had done anything and dealt with North Korea, dealt with Iran instead of sitting by and doing nothing, we wouldn’t have to clean up their mess now.”
