If you are looking for the best smartphone around Rs. 10,000, then you might have most probably short-listed three Xiaomi smartphones, the Redmi Note 5, Redmi Note 4, and the Redmi 4. All the three smartphones have a similar price tag, and each one of them has their pros and cons. If you’ve ended up on this article, then you are most probably confused between the three smartphones. We’ve compared the three smartphones and below are our thoughts.
The Redmi Note 5 is the only device among the three smartphones to feature a bezel-less display, and unless you like a device with a small screen, the Redmi Note 5 has the best display among the three devices. The 5.99-inch screen size of the Redmi Note 5 may give you the impression that the device is large, but in reality, it is more compact than some of the 5.5-inch screen size devices. Additionally, the display is brighter and also sharper than the displays of the other two devices.
The Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 has a traditional 5.5-inch IPS LCD with Full HD resolution, and the Redmi 4 has a smaller 5-inch IPS LCD with HD resolution. As we’ve said above, the Redmi 4 is suitable for those who prefer a smartphone with small screen size, but apart from that, the Redmi 4’s display is nowhere near the bezel-less display of the Redmi Note 5. Same goes for the Redmi Note 4, though its display is decent, it doesn’t match the beauty of the Redmi Note 5’s bezel-less display.
The primary and the secondary cameras of the three smartphones have similar specifications, but all of them have different camera sensors, on the front and the back as well. The Redmi Note 5 has a newer 12MP camera sensor, which aims at providing better image quality and video recording than the Redmi Note 4. The 12MP primary camera of the Redmi Note 5 has phase-detection autofocus and dual-tone dual-LED flash, whereas the front-facing camera is a 5MP unit.
The Redmi Note 4 has a 13MP primary camera with phase-detection autofocus and dual-tone dual-LED flash and a 5MP front-facing camera. The cheaper Redmi 4 too gets a 13MP primary camera with phase-detection autofocus, and 5MP front-facing camera, but the image quality from the primary camera isn’t as good as that of the Redmi Note 4, mainly due to lower specced ISP. Sadly though, none of the smartphones feature 4K video recording.
The Redmi Note 5 and the Redmi Note 4 use Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 SoC, which does a decent job of providing smooth gaming and fast performance. The cheaper Redmi 4 has Qualcomm Snapdragon 435 SoC, which is not as powerful as the Snapdragon 625. Hence, the gaming on the Redmi 4 feels a tad less smooth, and the device doesn’t performs as fast as the Redmi Note 5 or the Redmi Note 4.
On the software side, all the three smartphones feature Android 7.1.1 Nougat OS with MIUI 9 customisation. The MIUI 9 has tons of features, and it can be easily customised. According to us, no other smartphone in Rs. 10,000 price range has as many software features as these three smartphones. Also, the MIUI 9 feels well-optimised, and it looks good too.
While the Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 and the Redmi 4 pack a 4100mAh battery, the Redmi Note 5 has a 4000mAh battery. We’ve tested the Redmi 4 and the Redmi Note 4, and we’ve found their battery backup to be similar, in spite of the Redmi 4 having a smaller screen size. We are yet to test the Redmi Note 5’s battery to its full potential, but we think it will have slightly lesser battery backup than the other two smartphones, as its battery is 100mAh smaller, and it also has a larger screen size.
If you look at the 64GB storage variants of all the three devices, the Redmi 4 and the Redmi Note 4 cost Rs. 10,999, while the Redmi Note 5 costs Rs. 11,999. The Redmi Note 5 is just Rs. 1,000 expensive than the other two smartphones while providing a better display, better camera hardware, and better overall design. We think the Xiaomi Redmi 5 is the best pick among the three smartphones unless you don’t want to shell out the additional Rs. 1,000.
