Dallas sportscaster Dale Hansen just won’t stick to sports.
Dallas sportscaster Dale Hansen won’t just stick to sports.
Hansen, a broadcaster for Dallas’ WFAA, used his position to speak out against gun violence in the country following Wednesday’s school shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Florida.
The Army veteran called for change and took a shot at people calling for «thoughts and prayers» every time something like this happens. Hansen believes because the shooters are white, no changes are ever made.
«If it was a Muslim or a Mexican doing the shootings how much money would we spend then to stop the madness? But since it’s almost always a white kid there’s just nothing we can do. America has 5% of the world’s population and yet 31% of the world’s mass shootings. We’re worried about people coming to this country, they should be worried about us coming to theirs,» Hansen said.
In the Florida school shooting,17 people were killed and another 14 were injured. These kinds of incidents seem to happen regularly.
Hansen said when Australia had four mass shootings between 1987-1996, they passed stricter gun laws and haven’t had one since.
«Last time I said we need to find a way to stop a nut with a gun and that’s all I said, I got an email saying ‘I’m saving my last bullet to put it right between your eyes.’ Just another responsible gun owner in America. And I’m taking all bets he’s a white guy. So there’s just nothing we can do,» Hansen said.
This isn’t the first time Hansen has sounded off on politics and social issues.
The sportscaster criticized President Trump in September and defended the national anthem protests in the NFL.
«The young, black athletes are not disrespecting America or the military by taking a knee during the anthem. They are respecting the best thing about America. It’s a dog whistle to the racists among us to say otherwise,» Hansen said in September. «They, and all of us, should protest how black Americans are treated in this country. And if you don’t think white privilege is a fact, you don’t understand America.»
Hansen has also had videos go viral of him discussing Baylor and Johnny Manziel.
