TOKYO—A North Korean fishing boat captain who admitted stealing goods from a Japanese island after getting shipwrecked was given a suspended sentence Tuesday by a Japanese court and is expected to return home.
A district court judge in the northern city of Hakodate sentenced Kang Myong Hak, 45, to two years and six months in prison but suspended the sentence for four years, a court official said, meaning he doesn’t have to serve the time if he abides by the law during the four-year period.
