Facebook has been in hot water recently due to its data practices in the wake of Cambridge Analytica.
The firm took out a full-page ad in the UK’s Sunday Telegraph and the US’s New York Times, apologising for its error and promising to make things right.
“We have a responsibility to protect your information, if we can’t, we don’t deserve it,”Facebook’s ad said. The firm noted that it was taking steps to “make sure it doesn’t happen again”.
Earlier last week, Zuckerberg shared a longer apology on his personal Facebook page as well as highlighting steps the firm was taking to limit developer access to data in the coming months.
We have a responsibility to protect your data, and if we can’t then we don’t deserve to serve you. I’ve been working to understand exactly what happened and how to make sure this doesn’t happen again. The good news is that the most important actions to prevent this from happening again today we have already taken years ago. But we also made mistakes, there’s more to do, and we need to step up and do it
…
This was a breach of trust between Kogan, Cambridge Analytica and Facebook. But it was also a breach of trust between Facebook and the people who share their data with us and expect us to protect it. We need to fix that.
In a much-critiqued exchange with a friend year ago the 19-year-old Zuckerberg shared the following.
“I have over 4,000 emails, pictures, addresses, SNS. People just submitted it. ” He said then, “I don’t know why. They ‘trust me.’ Dumb ****s”
In the light of the current brouhaha, perhaps young Zuckerberg’s comments were more than a little prescient.
