What happened: The Detroit Tigers lost to the Kansas City Royals, 1-0.… It was cold and soggy throughout but with steady rain in the area, the two teams were able to play a full nine-inning game.… Matthew Boyd pitched well, throwing six innings of one-run baseball.… The Tigers were quiet at the plate, recording only three hits.… They are 1-4 on the season.

Starting off: Boyd was in control from the get-go and pounded the strike zone. He allowed hard contact but was not punished for it.… Boyd’s only blemish was a bloop double by Cheslor Cuthbert, a pop-up which fell beyond Miguel Cabrera’s chase in shallow right field.… The left-hander allowed four hits, struck out one and walked none.

At the plate: Victor Martinez, Jeimer Candelario and Mikie Mahtook singled.… Dixon Machado walked.… The Tigers put two runners in scoring position.… Jorge Soler drove in the Royals’ only run on a sacrifice fly to left field.
On the mound: Royals right-hander Jakob Junis matched Boyd pitch-for-pitch. He threw seven-plus scoreless innings, allowing three hits with six strikeouts.… Alex Wilson relieved Boyd, throwing 1⅔ scoreless innings.… Daniel Stumpf faced three batters: Both lefties reached and he retired the righty.… Drew VerHagen stranded a runner on first base with a scoreless ninth inning.
Overseen: Fans scurried for cover when the rain arrived in the third inning. Most would remain there until the conclusion of the game.
