KGI analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has returned with more speculation about a possible entry level iPhone. The prediction – shared in an investors’ note – claims that there could be two variants of the lower cost iPhone. One of which could sell for as low as $550 (around RM2100).
The note reaffirms the rumour that there will be a 6.1-inch iPhone aimed at developing markets and entry level users. However, it also points to the possibility of a dual SIM dual standby (DSDS) variant. In such a case, it would be the single SIM version that gets sold for the lower price, while the DSDS version is expected to be sold for between $650 and $750.
An entry level device would mean that the expected 6.1-inch iPhone lacks an OLED display; instead being stuck with a far more pedestrian LCD screen. Despite this, it’s still expected to appeal to the Chinese market due to the availability of DSDS.
Two other iPhones are also expected to appear this year. A followup to the iPhone X with a 5.8-inch display, and a much larger 6.5-inch device that is believed to be a sort of “iPhone X Plus”. This bigger iPhone is also expected to support DSDS, while the smaller one will not.
Kuo has generally been reasonably accurate with his predictions in the past; which puts some weight to this recent note. Other rumours have been taken to referring to the budget model as the iPhone SE 2; but it’s far from certain that Apple will be using that name.
