In the end, the Maple Leafs survived the Bruins’ comeback effort in Game 5 of the Stanley Cup Playoffs matchup. Toronto’s 4-3 win staved off elimination, with Game 6 now to come.
Yet despite amassing a 4-1 lead against the Bruins, many Maple Leafs fans remained unconvinced. Some were especially nervous, considering the two teams’ playoff history. In 2013, Boston trailed 4-1 in Game 7 against Toronto, only to rally miraculously and win 5-4 in overtime.
Five years later, the memory remains a painfully present one as Maple Leafs fans noted on Twitter:
For his part, Maple Leafs forward Nazem Kadri said he wasn’t thinking about 2013.
“That’s in the past and I think it’s about time that we just turn the page on that one.”
In the end, the Maple Leafs held on despite being thoroughly out-shot by the Bruins, 45-21. The series now heads back to Toronto, where Boston last won in Game 4.
