Police said they suspect he likely died of either a heart attack or natural causes
Marvel’s Avengers: Infinity War was the last thing one Indian man saw ahead of his unexpected death Tuesday.
Peddapasupula Baasha was identified as the moviegoer who died watching the flick, The Times of India first reported Wednesday. Baasha, 43, died during a screening of Infinity War in 3D at the Cinehub Multiplex theatre in Kadapa district in Andhra Pradesh, India. The construction worker headed to see the Disney-Marvel venture, which Box Office Mojo data confirms grossed $18.4 million in India as of April 29, as a part of Cinehub’s May Day celebrations.
Cinehub staffers originally believed Baasha desired to stay seated for Infinity War ‘s post-credits scene, but they grew suspicious after he failed to leave his seat when the film wrapped, according to The Times of India. Upon removing his 3D glasses, they quickly noticed that Baasha’s eyes remained open as he was unconscious. The theatre’s staff responded by alerting the proper authorities.
Representatives for Cinehub Multiplex did not immediately return Newsweek ‘s request for comment, but police intend to embark upon an investigation to determine what led to Baasha’s death. For now, police said they suspect he likely died of natural causes.
Baasha isn’t the first person to die while visiting their local cinema. In 2010, a 42-year-old Taiwanese died of a stroke from watching James Cameron’s Avatar. “It’s likely that the over-excitement from watching the movie triggered his symptoms,” Dr. Peng Chin-Chih told Agence France-Presse (AFP). After hitting the movie theater to see Beauty and the Beast in 2017, an Ohio man died of a suspected overdose, ABC affiliate WSYX reported.
In its premiere week, Infinity War has achieved several box office records. The film, which stars the likes of Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Evans, had the highest-grossing domestic box office debut of any other motion picture, Business Insider reported. According to Variety, the Disney-Marvel venture is on track to join the coveted billion-dollar box office club.
