After focusing on the offline retail segment in India for many years, Chinese smartphone maker OPPO finally decided to take on Xiaomi in the online segment by announcing its new Realme sub-brand in partnership with Amazon India earlier this month. The sub-brand’s first smartphone, the Realme 1, will be launched in India on May 15 i.e tomorrow. Ahead of the launch event next week, the upcoming budget Android smartphone has been spotted on the popular Geekbench benchmark database online. In a separate leak, hands-on images of the smartphone have appeared on the web, along with its alleged specifications.
Listed on the Geekbench benchmark database as the OPPO CPH1859, the Realme 1 will be powered by a MediaTek Helio P60 “MT6771V/W” octa-core chipset clocked at 2.0 GHz. Manufactured on a 12nm FinFET process by TSMC, the Helio P60 chipset features four ARM Cortex-A73 cores clocked at 2.0 GHz and four ARM Cortex-A53 cores clocked at 2.0 GHz. Graphics are handled by an ARM Mali-G72 MP3 GPU clocked at up to 800 MHz for smooth performance. As you can see in the Geekbench listing above, the octa-core Helio P60 chipset has been coupled with 6GB of RAM on the Realme 1. While no evidence of a 4GB RAM variant has surfaced online so far, there is a chance that the handset will be offered in at least two memory configurations. As far as the software is concerned, the Realme 1 will be launching with the latest Android 8.1 Oreo operating system out of the box. As for the benchmark performance, the prototype unit managed to score 1501 in the single-core test and 5726 in the multi-core test. These scores are only slightly behind what the Snapdragon 660-powered Nokia 7 Plus manages in the same benchmark and higher than the scores typically achieved by Xiaomi’s Redmi Note 5 Pro.
The hands-on images shared by iGyaan reveal a design very similar to the OPPO A3, although the Realme 1 does differ from the A3 in one area. While the OPPO A3 display features a notch on the top, the Realme 1 doesn’t have any notch. The display size is also reportedly a little smaller at 6-inches. The iGyaan report also claims the smartphone will be equipped with 128GB of onboard storage, 13MP rear camera, 8MP front camera, and a 3410mAh capacity battery.
While no concrete leak has surfaced online yet, it is likely that the OPPO Realme 1 will start at somewhere around the Rs.15,000 mark in India. OPPO is reportedly targeting Xiaomi’s hugely popular Redmi series of smartphones priced between Rs.10,000 to Rs.15,000, so there is a good chance that at least the 4GB RAM variant of the smartphone will be priced well under Rs.15,000.
While the rest of the Realme 1’s key specs remain a complete mystery at this point, the design of the smartphone suggests that it could be very similar to the OPPO A3 that was launched in China last month. If the Realme 1 is indeed based on the OPPO A3, you can expect it to feature a 6.2-inch notched IPS LCD display with 1080 x 2280 Full HD+ resolution and 19:9 aspect ratio. While the A3 includes 128GB of built-in storage, we expect the Realme 1 to come in 32GB and 64GB storage variants.
In the camera department, the OPPO A3 features a 16-megapixel rear camera with phase-detection autofocus and an f/1.8 aperture lens. The Realme 1 is likely to come with the same 16-megapixel snapper on the back. For selfies, the upcoming smartphone could feature an 8-megapixel snapper with an f/2.2 aperture lens and AI-based beautification feature similar to what we have seen on the OPPO F7.
Connectivity options on the Realme 1 could include Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac dual-band, Bluetooth 4.2 Low Energy, FM radio, USB OTG, GPS with A-GPS, GLONASS, and 4G VoLTE. Fueling the internals of the handset is likely to be a 3400mAh non-removable unit, identical to the OPPO A3 and OPPO F7 smartphones. Since both the A3 and F7 lack fast charging support, the Realme 1 might also lack the feature. However, the Realme 1 will have AI battery management feature to help extend battery life. As revealed by the Geekbench listing, the Realme 1 is expected to ship with Android 8.1 Oreo-based ColorOS 5.0 out of the box when it goes on sale in India later this month.
