Donald Glover, who goes by “Childish Gambino” in the music industry, hosted Saturday Night Live (SNL) and debuted his new song, “This Is America.”
Glover, who largely kept politics out of his SNL hosting duties, performed “This Is America,” on the live show, which highlights the problem of gun violence consuming the country.
While the performance provided viewers with a glimpse of Glover’s multitude of talents and skills, the video is the medium which enables people to see the depth of the song’s message.
The song and corresponding video seem to call to light the contrast between everyday life, where people are pursuing lighthearted pleasure, and the repeated threats of gun violence seen in America.
Then, towards the end, he holds his arms out, raps the line, “They gonna find you that blocka,” which is slang for the sound a firearm makes when it’s shot.
The song was widely praised on Twitter, largely for Glover using his art to call attention to problems plaguing our nation, and specifically Black America, without using charged political language.
