Red Dead Redemption protagonist John Marston will feature in Red Dead Redemption 2, with the latest trailer for the game featuring the character in several scenes.
The latest Red Dead Redemption 2 trailer offers fans another look at the game. It shows the Van der Linde gang as it is hunted by bounty hunters and federal agents and also shows them stealing from people and holding up trains. But all of this action isn’t the only reason that fans have to get excited about the game.
Eagle-eyed viewers of the new trailer have spotted a familiar face: John Marston. The trailer seems to confirm that the protagonist from Red Dead Redemption will also feature in Red Dead Redemption 2. Marston has been spotted at three points in the trailer, including one scene where someone has him in a headlock and he has some freshly stitched facial wounds. Marston is known for his facial scars and so it seems that Red Dead Redemption 2 may reveal exactly how he got them.
In another scene, viewers can see the Red Dead Redemption protagonist being shoved to his knees in what looks like an arrest or a capture by another gang. Then, in another scene where the Van der Linde gang is standing around, Marston is standing at the back of the group (he’s highlighted in the tweet above). The timeline of these events isn’t clear but the game could potentially include a mission in which the other members of the Van der Linde gang have to rescue him.
When considering the story details that Rockstar Games revealed alongside the new Red Dead Redemption 2 trailer, it comes as little surprise that the game would feature John Marston. Marston was an outlaw and gunslinger who ran with the gang and it is where he met his wife, Abigail. Together, Marston and the rest of the gang stole and conducted other crimes all over the wild west though Marston tried to retire from the outlaw life in 1906 after a robbery with the gang went wrong.
Red Dead Redemption has one of the boldest endings in gaming (spoiler warning for that link) and John Marston is one of the most renowned protagonists in gaming. Many agree that Rockstar Games did a fantastic job with that game’s narrative and so many fans of it will appreciate that Red Dead Redemption 2 gives them a chance to learn more about the gang and John Marston’s role. It’s unclear just how significant a role John Marston will play in the game (Arthur Morgan is the protagonist) though Rockstar may reveal more information at a later date.
