The England and Manchester United record goalscorer will be one of the highest profile stars to join MLS in the league’s history.
England’s record goalscorer Wayne Rooney is to leave Everton for a move to North American team DC United, the US club and the English Premier League outfit announced Thursday.
“Everton and Wayne Rooney have reached an agreement for the player to join MLS (Major League Soccer) side DC United on a permanent transfer,” said a club statement.
“Rooney will complete the formalities of his move when the MLS transfer window opens on July 10.
“From everyone at Everton, we thank Wayne for his service to the club and wish him every success in the next three-and-a-half years with DC United.”
Rooney rejoined the Toffees last year after 13 seasons with Manchester United. Rooney scored 11 goals this past season, including a hat trick last November against West Ham. He scored 253 goals for Manchester United in all competitions across 13 seasons, making him the club’s all-time record goalscorer.
Rooney retired from international football last August as England’s record goalscorer with 53 goals in 119 appearances. Rooney will be one of the highest profile stars to join MLS in the league’s history. Former England team-mate David Beckham blazed the trail for overseas players when he joined the Los Angeles Galaxy in 2007.
Since then several veteran stars have joined the league, including Thierry Henry, Frank Lampard, Steven Gerrard, Andrea Pirlo and David Villa. Swedish star Zlatan Ibrahimovic joined the Galaxy earlier this year. Rooney and Ibrahimovic’s arrival this season however have bucked a recent trend in MLS in which clubs have tended to recruit younger and up-and-coming overseas players.
