The mother and son had been separated for over a month before their reunion early Friday, NBC 4 Washington reports. The two had trekked from Guatemala before crossing the U. S.-Mexico border in Arizona.
The heartfelt reunion comes days after Mejia-Mejia filed a lawsuit against the Trump administration in hopes of getting her son back.
“All I want is to be with my son. I want to see him. I appreciate all the attorneys and their help,” Mejia-Mejia told Politico after a Thursday hearing where the Department of Justice confirmed that her son was already being processed for release.
“My son is sad. I know my son, and like any mother, I had a feeling that he is sad, but first and foremost he said we are going to be together,” she said.

When asked what she wanted to do most now that they were back together, Mejia-Mejia’s answer was simple. “I just want to talk to him,” she explained. “It’s been so long.”
