Avoid losing Prime Day discounts to Amazon charges – don’t forget to cancel Amazon Prime before you are charged if you no longer want to benefit from the service.
There are a huge number of benefits in signing up to Amazon Prime, and thousands of new customers are subscribing in order to take advantage of Prime Day. Among other things Amazon Prime offers free delivery, but if you forget to cancel before the trial ends you will be charged. Here’s what to do to if you wish to unsubscribe from Prime.
You might think you’re not signed up to Prime, but Amazon’s approach means it might have slipped past your radar. Plenty of unwitting Amazon Prime customers have complained they had no idea they were signed up and had already been charged.
First check your credit card or bank statements to see if Amazon has charged you £79 for Prime membership.
You can also check whether you have an Amazon Prime account by signing into Your Account on the Amazon website. Click on Your Prime Membership in the drop-down menu to find out whether you are subscribed to the service. If you are, you can cancel your membership there and then.
When you sign up for Amazon Prime, your membership is set to automatically renew each year. You can turn off this automatic renewal at any time – even during a free trial period.
If you wish to continue with Prime but don’t wish to pay £79 a year, there is a cheaper option that includes only Prime Video. As before log into Amazon, click on Your Account and choose Manage Prime Membership. This time choose Change Membership.
Amazon offers you two options: Change to (the cheaper) Prime Instant Video (no free next-day delivery), or Keep Current Membership. You can cancel the Instant Video subscription at any time during the year so this option does give you more flexibility.
Paid members who haven’t placed an Amazon Prime order are eligible for a full refund. You can’t receive a refund if any of the household members have placed an Amazon Prime eligible order.
When you cancel a paid Prime membership you may automatically receive a refund.
You can also apply for a refund by visiting: amazon.co.uk/gp/help/customer/contact-us and making your request via the phone, email or online chat.
