Google will soon be debuting its all-new iteration of Android called Pie alongside its Pixel 3 line of smartphones. The Mount View-based company already announced the developer version of Android Pie earlier this year at its Build Conference. Therefore, we already know most of the new changes and the additions in the new iteration of Android.
A recent report by XDA Developers, however, bring to light a shocking omission from the all-new version of Android. The report reveals that Android Pie will no longer support third-party apps that enabled users to record voice calls on our smartphones. Google had previously discontinued the official call recording API with Android Marshmallow, however, third-party developers came to the rescue as they figured out a way to enable the feature on our smartphone. Popular developers of these call recording apps were so far utilizing the holes in the Android backend to continue providing call recording services. The latest Android Pie update, though seems to block all such holes in the Android code, thereby making it virtually impossible to use their call recording apps.
Google seems to have made this radical decision on the ground of privacy. Call recording while being beneficial for one party, spelled a doom for the other. Spammers and hackers can make use of this feature to record your voice, and later use the clips for completely wrong and unethical purposes. Android’s main counterpart, iOS, on the other hand, doesn’t allow its users to record voice calls, neither natively or via third-party applications.

Sundar Pichai led Google is yet any official statement regarding this new report. That said, the latest news is completely contradictory to a previous report that claimed Google is natively developing a call recording feature for Android 9.0 Pie. Apparently, the call recording feature on Android is used by a large section of users. It comes in handy in multiple occasions, so much so, that some Chinese brands like Xiaomi, Oppo, RealMe and a few others are touting this feature while announcing their new smartphones. It is believed that this update will not affect the voice recording feature, which is otherwise integrated into customer user interface used by these manufacturers.
Call recording comes in handy in various legal procedures around the world., In many cases, this feature alone help save users in a number of legal disputes, and in cases of spamming or cyber-crime. Additionally, some users tend to use this feature to record the voices of their near and dear ones, so that they can listen to the recording when their loved ones are away. Therefore, the latest development in Android Pie is sure to strike widespread concerns among Android users. That said, app developers had confirmed that it’s still possible to enable the call-recording feature on Android Pie powered smartphones by simply rooting the smartphones.

Not all countries freely allow users to record voice calls. Even in the US itself, the call recording rules vary from state to state. Some countries like Germany, on the other hand, require mutual consent from both parties for recording a voice call. Recently, a leak suggested that Google was working on a hack that will help users to understand that their call is being recording by sounding a puny alarm during the entire call. No such reports have been officially confirmed by Google officials yet. Therefore, we have no option but to wait for the launch of Android Pie 9.0 to confirm such news. It also needs to be seen whether third-party call recording developers end up to find another to push their services even in the latest build of Android. Just in case, they fail to do so, their app revenues are sure to take a major hit.
