The gamer who opened fire on several fellow competitors at a Florida Madden football tournament, killing two before taking his own life, was packing a pair of legally purchased guns during the rampage, officials said Monday.
Gunman David Katz, 24, legally bought the two handguns — a .45-caliber and a .9mm — in his hometown of Baltimore, Md. earlier this month and affixed an after-market laser sight to one of the weapons, officials said.
A livestream video feed of the tournament captured what appeared to be a laser dot creeping up one of the victim’s chests seconds before the first of at least a dozen gunshots rang out.
Katz, who was also packing extra ammo, only fired one of the guns during the assault, said Jacksonville Sheriff Mike Williams, although he didn’t specify which one.
“As bad as this is, it could’ve been much worse,” Williams said of the bloodshed that played out Sunday afternoon at the GLHF Game Bar.
Meanwhile Monday, the Sheriff’s Office updated the number of those injured to 11.
All of the injured victims are expected to survive.
Survivors said Katz snapped after being eliminated from the tournament .
“The suspect clearly targeted other gamers,” said Williams. “The suspect walked past patrons who were in other parts of the business and focused his attention on gamers.”
Katz didn’t leave a note and it’s believed he acted alone, Williams said.
