Indonesian authorities issued a tsunami warning after a magnitude 7 earthquake hit the Indonesian island of Bali, a popular tourist area, on Sunday.
United States Geological Services reported Lombok Island, near Bali, was hit around 11:46 a.m local time. The earthquake was estimated to be 6.5 miles deep.
Indonesia’s Disaster Mitigation Agency issued the possibility of a tsunami warning.
Celebrity Chrissy Teigen, who is on vacation in Bali with husband John Legend and her family, took to Twitter to describe the quake. (RELATED: UK Hit With Second Earthquake In Two Weeks)
The earthquake did considerable damage. Pictures show a local mall flooded and falling apart.
Ngurah Rai Airport in Denpasar, Bali closed down due to the earthquake, according to a tweet by Porter Media News.
Lombok experienced an earthquake with a magnitude of 6.4 on July 29 that triggered a landslide, leaving hundreds of tourists stranded on Mount Rinjani. Over 1,400 houses were damaged, and 16 people were killed, according to Fox News.
Indonesia is a hotspot for earthquakes because of its location on the “Ring of Fire,” which is where many volcanoes and fault lines encircle the Pacific Ocean. A 9.1 earthquake hit off the coast of Sumatra in December 2004, which produced a tsunami that killed 230,000 people across several countries, Fox reported.
Update: Indonesian officials lifted the tsunami warning, according to a tweet by the Associated Press.
