Here’s your disturbing slice of gaming news for the day: a new internet “challenge” has popped up that encourages people to self-harm or commit suicide. This “challenge” has now made its way into Minecraft in the form of a mod. Yikes.
The Momo Suicide Game, as it is being called, started on the messenger service WhatsApp. In this “challenge,” a disturbing humanoid creature called a Momo (which looks like a creepy photoshop) goes around encouraging players to harm themselves and film it. As Fox News reported, this has drawn comparisons to the Blue Whale Challenge and the Slender Man stabbing in Wisconsin.
A mod adding this Momo creature into Minecraft popped up recently, which features a character skin based on Momo’s appearance holding a phone with the WhatsApp icon. Understandably, this didn’t sit well with Microsoft. A spokesperson for the company provided the following statement to Fox News.
They did not elaborate in what ways the mod would be “restricted,” but I’d imagine it will be removed altogether.
