President Donald Trump on Tuesday accused Google of meddling with search results for “Trump News” to prioritize negative coverage about him from liberal media outlets.
“Google search results for ‘Trump News’ shows only the viewing/reporting of Fake New Media,” the president said in a pair of tweets, along with a typo for “News.”
“In other words, they have it RIGGED, for me & others, so that almost all stories & news is BAD. Fake CNN is prominent,” he wrote.
“Republican/Conservative & Fair Media is shut out. Illegal? 96% of results on ‘Trump News’ are from National Left-Wing Media, very dangerous,” Trump continued.
“Google & others are suppressing voices of Conservatives and hiding information and news that is good. They are controlling what we can & cannot see,” he wrote.
“This is a very serious situation-will be addressed! Trump added, without offering specifics.
His “96 percent” claim appeared to be a reference right-wing media outlet PJ Media, whose editor, Paula Bolyard, reported Saturday that she conducted an analysis by Googling Trump from various computers.
Boylard classified media companies as left or right wing based on a media bias chart compiled by former CBS News correspondent and “fake news” critic Sharyl Attkisson.
“Is Google manipulating its algorithm to prioritize left-leaning news outlets in their coverage of President Trump?” asked Bolyard, who describes herself on Twitter as a Christian, a constitutional conservative and a “Cultural nonconformist.”
“As you can see, CNN has a disproportionate number of articles returned when searching for ‘Trump’ — nearly 29 percent of the total,” she wrote.
“In fact, left-leaning sites comprised 96 percent of the total results,” Bolyard wrote, while acknowledging that her methods are “not scientific.”
Trump has lashed recently out about alleged discrimination against conservative voices, claiming last month that he would investigate Twitter for “shadow-banning prominent Republicans,” a claim that has yet to be substantiated.
Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey said his employees are “more left-leaning” — but insisted that political ideology doesn’t affect what appears on the social media giant.
Google didn’t immediately respond to The Post’s request for comment Tuesday, but previously said it was working to “elevate accurate, quality content” in its search rankings, according to ABC News.
