Two people arrested in the killing of a man who authorities described as having been brutally attacked have had their charges upgraded to murder.
David Hansen, 46, of Decorah, died Aug. 30 from injuries he sustained in an attack more than a month earlier, the Winneshiek Sheriff’s Office said.
Dalton Adam, 18 and Jacob Seelinger, 17, who were initially charged with attempted murder, have since been charged with first-degree murder. The two were held Monday at the Winneshiek County Jail on $1 million cash bond, the sheriff’s office said.
Deputies responded on the night of July 12 to Old Stage Road after a witness said Seelinger and Adam were assaulting Hansen, who was “in bad shape medically,” according to court documents. The attackers fled the scene, authorities said.
Hansen was beaten and bloody, his face experiencing extreme swelling, officials wrote in charging documents. A deputy at the scene said when he heard Hansen having a difficult time breathing, he believed he was going to die, court records show.
Born in Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin, Hansen was surrounded by family when he died at Gundersen Health Systems in La Crosse, Wisconsin, according to his obituary.
Adam admitted to punching and kicking Hansen after he was knocked to the ground, according to a criminal complaint. Seelinger’s mother told deputies she saw her son also punch and kick Hansen, authorities said.
Before their charges were upgraded, Seelinger and Adam pleaded not guilty to willful injury resulting in serious injury and attempted murder, court records show.
As they searched for Adam, the sheriff’s office warned residents to lock their doors and vehicles. He was found by the Crawford County Sheriff’s Office in Wisconsin.
A number of agencies, including the Iowa Attorney General’s Office and Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation, were assisting in the investigation.
