As Tropical Storm Florence barreled toward North Carolina, prompting a state of emergency there, the Houston area is also forecast to see some thunder showers.
“We are not expecting any tropical storms this weekend or any other systems to come through here for the next five days,” said Katie Magee, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service. “But we will see scattered showers starting up this morning and going throughout the weekend.”
The Houston area had up to a 50-percent chance of rain Saturday, with more expected further north. Sunday was forecast to be slightly wetter, with high temperatures throughout the weekend expected in the low 90-degrees.
Florence was strengthening into a “better organized” weather system that would likely develop into a hurricane later Saturday, meteorologists said, but was expected largely to impact the U. S. Southeast Coast. The storm’s center was on track to approach Thursday after passing between Bermuda and the Bahamas.
Meanwhile the remnants of Tropical Storm Gordon continued to soak areas of the Midwest and East coast this weekend. Though the system did not directly impact south Texas, heavy rain fell here over the Labor Day weekend, causing downpours from Freeport to Galveston. One of the island’s main thoroughfares flooded and in the tourist-area of The Strand, businesses closed until the water subsided.
