Nintendo announces the release date for the upcoming Switch port of Diablo 3, which will be available on the first day of the annual BlizzCon event in Anaheim.
While fans may be anxiously awaiting news about the next entry in the Diablo franchise, developer Blizzard has at least been generous with ports of the current game, Diablo 3. A version of the title for the Nintendo Switch was first announced a few weeks ago, but no news was given about when gamers could get their hands on it. Now, Nintendo has revealed that players will be able to play the game on the hybrid mobile console on November 2,2018.
This means that the Diablo 3 port will launch on the first day of Blizzard’s annual Blizzcon event, a massive conference hosted in Los Angeles each year for fans of the entertainment giant. While having a release date is nice, it would’ve been cool to save the announcement for an “…and it’s available now” moment on stage during the event’s opening ceremony.
Regardless, the port is a godsend for Diablo fans everywhere. The ability to play the game on the go with the Nintendo Switch should be great for anyone that frequently travels and doesn’t have the ability to keep their PC strapped on their back. While fans’ excitement level isn’t quite where it would be if Diablo 4 were announced, at least it’s another instance of the Switch bringing console-quality games to a portable audience, much like Bethesda did with The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim.
The fact that Blizzard announced the Switch port this early is probably a good sign for the rest of the franchise. The company reportedly has multiple Diablo projects in the works, and has been relatively silent about the series for the past few years, with the game being reduced to nothing more than a single small demo at last year’s BlizzCon. It’s been more than 6 years since the initial launch of Diablo 3, so the time is right for another entry in the franchise.
BlizzCon is now just a few short months away, and fans of the company should expect a ton of news about their favorite games. Last year brought new content for both Overwatch and World of Warcraft, with the former receiving a new map and the healing character Moira, while the latter received the Battle For Azeroth expansion. Hopefully, this year will also bring a lot of exciting new announcements and content.
