The New York Daily News on Saturday honored Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) and Aretha Franklin on the paper’s front page, calling the late icons the “heart & soul of America.”
Saturday’s front page came the day after Franklin’s funeral service in Detroit, and the day of McCain’s funeral in Washington, D. C.
“Farewell to the heart & soul of America,” the caption reads.
Franklin, known as the “Queen of Soul,” died from pancreatic cancer earlier this month. Her hours-long funeral service featured remarks from musical and political icons, including Stevie Wonder, Rev. Al Sharpton and former President Bill Clinton.
McCain, who died Aug. 25, just over a year after his brain cancer diagnosis was made public, was widely respected as a “maverick” and a “hero” by members of both major political parties.
Former presidents Barack Obama and George W. Bush delivered eulogies at his funeral Saturday at the Washington National Cathedral.
