A protester held a sign ripping President Trump as a “coward” alongside the funeral procession for the late Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) in Washington on Saturday.
“POW McCain hero, Trump coward,” the sign read.
The message was clearly visible in news coverage of the procession carrying McCain’s casket from the Washington National Cathedral.
McCain died Aug. 25 at age 81 from an advanced form of brain cancer.
Trump was not invited to the funeral service. The president and senator had a contentious relationship that continued even into McCain’s death, with Trump declining to issue a statement on McCain until two days after his death.
Trump famously mocked McCain for being a prisoner of war during Vietnam, saying during the 2016 presidential race: “He was a war hero because he was captured. I like people who weren’t captured.”
Trump has been criticized by McCain and others for receiving five deferments from the draft during the Vietnam War, at least one of which cited bone spurs.
McCain will be buried Sunday in a private service at the U. S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md.
