It has been reported that Huawei had been tampering with benchmark tests to showcase higher performance than the actual performance.
Huawei, the Chinese smartphone maker, has been riding on a high in the last few months. Earlier in August, it surpassed Apple to become the second largest smartphone maker in the world. Even in India, it has been gaining ground and visibility with a slew of phone launches. However, this latest piece of news comes as a bit of a blot on the company as it’s related to one its much-touted smartphone, the P20 Pro. The P20 was claimed to be among the first phones to boast of a triple rear camera set up.
It has been reported that Huawei had been tampering with benchmark tests to showcase higher performance than the actual performance. Huawei has been doing it not just with one smartphone but two others. The two other phones are Huawei Nova 3 and Honor Play. UL, the company behind 3D Mark tests, one of the most popular benchmark tests has in fact delisted all three smartphones.
The company on its website posted, that it decided to test scores after it was reported “Huawei and its sub-brand, Honor, seem to be producing artificially high and misleading benchmark scores.”The company further stated, “After testing the devices in our own lab and confirming that they breach our rules, we have decided to delist the affected models and remove them from our performance rankings.”
UL said that it got in touch with Huawei and got a positive response. “We contacted Huawei with our findings, and we are happy to say that they have pledged to implement a more transparent approach in a future update.” Huawei according to UL, “is planning to provide users with access to “Performance Mode” so they can use the maximum power of their device when they need to.”
It’s not the first time a smartphone maker has been caught tampering with benchmarking scores. Samsung had reportedly done so in 2013 and even OnePlus was allegedly caught doing the same.
Huawei P20 Pro was in news for other wrong reasons recently when it was reported that it had used “fake” images in advertisements. Apparently, Huawei had used D-SLR shots and masked them as images clicked on the P20 Pro.
