The Xiaomi Mi 8 Explorer Edition might be selling in China in proliferate amounts, but the global launch of the smartphone seems like a distant reality. However, according to an Infocomm Media Development Authority (IMDA) of Singapore, the device has been spotted, leading to believe that all hope is not lost and that the flagship can still become a global sensation when it is found and sold in various markets.
A Xiaomi-branded device featuring the model number M1807E8A was spotted at Infocomm Media Development Authority (IMDA) of Singapore during the weekend. However, there are some very interesting things that you will notice about this leak. Firstly, this is the same model that was found at EEC bearing the Mi 8 Pro name and in Singapore, it features the same Mi 8 Pro label.
Looking at these two models, there is without a doubt that this device is the Mi 8 Explorer Edition and is quite different than the regular Xiaomi Mi 8. For instance, the Mi 8 Explorer Edition has a unique transparent back, with the dimensions of the model M1807E8A being 154.6 x 74.8 x 7.6mm, along with a weight of 177 grams.
The remaining differences are highlighted in our specifications and features section that has been given below.
Xiaomi POCO F1: First Impressions, Quick Look
The Xiaomi Mi 8 Explorer Edition comes with a 6.21-inch Super AMOLED display with a Full HD+ resolution and an 83.8 percent screen-to-body ratio. The screen is covered by a Corning Gorilla Glass 5. The phone also offers an Apple iPhone X-style screen notch, complete with 3D facial recognition technology and an in-display fingerprint reader is embedded within the device. Fueling the Mi 8 Explorer Edition is the Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 chipset, which is paired with an Adreno 630 GPU.
Alongside these specifications, the device features 8GB RAM and 128GB of internal memory. Unfortunately, the device does not feature expandable storage via microSD card but with this much onboard storage in your hands, it honestly does not look like you need to expand your available memory. For those that don’t know, This is the only memory configuration belonging to the Mi 8 Explorer Edition.
The smartphone also runs the Android 8.1 Oreo-based MIUI 10 software and it features a dual-12MP camera setup with Dual-Pixel PDAF, OIS, and LED flash. It can also capture images seamlessly with a background blur effect, and record 4K videos at 60fps, along with 720p slow-motion videos. There’s a 20MP selfie camera at the front with Portrait Mode and Portrait Lighting Effects support. For battery life, there is a 3000mAh capacity with Qualcomm’s Quick Charge 4.0+ support.
The Xiaomi Mi 8 has not been officially launched in India and neither has the Mi 8 Explorer Edition. If you want to catch up on the latest updates, we highly recommend that you follow Mi India on Twitter. If that is not your cup of tea, you can follow our front page for the latest news updates on the availability of the Mi 8 Explorer Edition. If this smartphone does manage to land in India, it could carry a price of around Rs. 39,999.
However, with the availability of the POCO F1, we do not believe that something like this is going to happen. The Mi 8 Explorer Edition is no doubt a well-made phone and features the latest hardware. However, buyers will also be looking for value with their purchase, which might be a reason why the Mi 8 Explorer Edition has not launched here.
