While we wait for its next-gen GPUs, AMD has confirmed that it is working on its high-end GPUs. But, it will be a ling wait before they release.
AMD has been killing it in the CPU market. However, things aren’t particularly looking bright for AMD on the GPU side. While we wait for its next-gen GPUs, AMD has confirmed that it is working on its high-end GPUs.
Speaking with Barrons, AMD CEO Lisa Su talked about company’s plans for its high-end GPUs. She noted that AMD is actively working on “high-performing quality products and building a solid long-term foundation”. She added that AMD still intends to compete with Nvidia in the high-end GPU market.
Now the statement is pretty vague but, it does hints that AMD isn’t planning on rushing out any of its next-gen GPUs just yet. It seems that AMD will take its time to roll out its “High-Performing” GPUs to compete with Nvidia’s RTX GPUs.
The way I see it, AMD is taking its time to introduce its high-end GPUs that will compete Nvidia’s latest Real-Time Ray Tracing tech. But, that might also mean we will have to wait a while before these GPUs are out.
Speaking of AMD GPUs, during the recent earnings call, Lisa Su revealed that AMD missed its target revenue by $50 million. The reason for the revenue being low is low GPU sales thanks to the downfall of cryptocurrency mining.
Seems like AMD was still expecting crypto-currency mining to sell more of its GPUs. However, AMD has fallen victim to its own expectations. Another reason for AMD to miss its revenue target could be the lack of new AMD GPUs.
While we wait for next-gen AMD GPUs, AMD Vega 20 has pooped up online. This time the GPU showed up in the new Final Fantasy 15 benchmarks. However, it is surprising to see the GPU in Final Fantasy 15 benchmarks since it is a Nvidia title.
If this tease is any indication then we might be lucky enough to see a reveal of AMD Vega 20 by the end of 2018 and early 2019 release.
AMD is making quite a splash in the CPU market and 7nm Zen2 CPUs are next in line to launch. Reportedly these CPUs offer 13% IPC gains over Zen+. One of the reasons for this gain in IPS is the fact that current Zen+ chips are based on the 12nm process node.
