Apple Support tweeted in response, saying “that’s definitely not expected behavior”
Apple is investigating a report of an iPhone X that allegedly exploded while it was being updated to iOS 12.1. Rahel Mohamad tweeted earlier this week that his 10-month-old iPhone X “got hot and exploded” while updating. The incident happened in Federal Way, Washington in the US and Apple has reached out to Mohamad and is looking into the matter. In a reply to Mohamad’s original tweet, Apple Support said, “that’s definitely not expected behavior. DM us, so we can look into this with you.”
Mohamad told Gadgets360 that the iPhone X was bought in January and that he was using it normally. It was only after he began updating the device to iOS 12.1 while it was connected to a charger that he noticed smoke being emitted from the unit. “Dark grey smoke started coming from the phone. The update was completed and as soon as the phone turned on it started to smoke and caught fire.”
The user claims he was using the bundled Apple charger and cable to charge the iPhone X and that the explosion only took place after it was removed from the charger and the phone turned on. “When I held the phone it was very hot and I drop the phone immediately. Then it started to smoke.” he added.
Mohamad posted images of the charred iPhone X unit, revealing damage on both the front and the rear panels. He later tweeted an update on Wednesday that Apple was unable to see him until Tuesday, so the company asked him to ship the unit to investigate further. As of now, this seems to be a one-off incident as there haven’t been more reports of iPhone X units exploding. We will know more about the reason behind the explosion once Apple has concluded its investigation.
