As Christmas Day dawns around the world, countless smartphones will be unwrapped, including the latest iPhones. Even if sales of the iOS handsets are falling below Apple’s expectations, there’s still a lot of activations, app downloads, and software updates to process. And that means new users should get ready for some short-term disappointment.

Last year, Apple’s iPhone was the leading device to be activated over the holidays, with a 44 percent share of the market. Samsung came in second with 26 percent, and Huawei third on 5 percent. TechCrunch’s Sarah Perez reported at the time:
Apple devices accounted for 44 percent of smartphone and tablet activations over the holidays, with nearly a third of those coming from new devices including the iPhone 8,8 Plus and X, according to new data from Flurry Analytics out this morning.
