The tributes in the obituaries of the late President George Herbert Walker Bush have been effusive and kind in the wake of his death Friday night at his Houston home, aged 94.
It entirely marked the passing of an era, many noted — the time of the greatest generation that won World War II. Every president from Franklin Delano Roosevelt through “the first” Bush served in that war, meaning it was the major event in the lives of our national leaders from 1940 through 1993.
Bush served as president from 1989 to ‘93, and had been Ronald Reagan’s vice president the previous eight years, so that he spent a remarkable amount of time at or near the pinnacle of the nation’s and the world’s power. Not only that — he earlier served as a congressman, a senator, the director of the CIA and the United States ambassador to China, among other posts.
