MADISON, Wis. — John Beilein doesn’t lose his temper often.
Michigan basketball’s head coach will get frustrated. But it’s rare to see him as apoplectic as he was Saturday afternoon with less than a minute left in No. 2 Michigan’s 64-54 loss to Wisconsin.
Trailing by three with 59 seconds left, the Wolverines were trying to intentionally foul Wisconsin star Ethan Happ — a 49-percent free-throw shooter entering the game.
Freshman forward Ignas Brazdeikis went to foul Happ, who was away from the ball.
The whistle blew.
The officials huddled for nearly 10 seconds before coming to a decision: a flagrant 1 personal foul, which meant two free throws and possession of the ball, effectively icing the game for Wisconsin.
After the call was made, Beilein was furious, approaching an official along the sideline. At one point, assistant coaches Saddi Washington and DeAndre Haynes tried to usher him back to Michigan’s bench, physically holding Beilein back.
The call was interpreted differently by each head coach.
