With a wedding in the works and a brand new career with the NYPD, Brian Kessler was just starting the rest of his life when he was killed a week ago in a head-on car crash, loved ones recalled at his funeral on Wednesday.
The tragic 28-year-old was best remembered for his lifelong dream of wearing a badge and uniform, his fondness for Ireland, where he’d been more than a dozen times — and his secret love for daily bubble baths.
“Since we met, he was so determined to become a police officer,” Kessler’s mourning fiancée, Denise Vargas, wrote in a eulogy that was read aloud. “It was a long and difficult process, but he made it, and he was so happy he graduated from the academy.”
Kessler had graduated from the police academy in October and was heading home from working an overnight tour at 1 Police Plaza when he died last Wednesday.
His 2013 Chevy Equinox slammed directly into a Parks Department garbage truck along a winding section of Shore Road in Pelham Bay Park.
Vargas, whose words of remembrance were read to the packed Immaculate Conception Church in Tuckahoe by his uncle and godfather, Paul Landolfe, said her hubby-to-be was looking forward to the next chapter in his life — getting married, buying a home and having children.
