Sen. Chuck Grassley was on the main stage at President Donald Trump’s State of the Union address Tuesday, serving as part of Trump’s escort committee in his role of president pro tempore.
Grassley said there wasn’t too much to his role.
“I just had to sit there and listen,” he said in a weekly call with reporters Wednesday.
There was “too much standing up and sitting down” at the address, Grassley told reporters on another call Wednesday afternoon according to a tweet from reporter Sarah Beckman.
He got to have a “small talk with the president” before the address, but otherwise just listened along with the crowd alongside his wife, Barbara Grassley, who was his guest for the night.

While he didn’t find his role on the escort committee onerous, he did have opinions on the president’s speech.
