Like the 1991 film Hook, Christopher Robin imagines what it would be like if a character from a beloved children’s work — in this case, Christopher Robin, the plucky child from the Winnie the Pooh stories — were to grow up, leaving their adventuring days behind. The film begins with Christopher’s last day in the Hundred Acre Wood, bidding farewell to his animal friends, including honey-loving slacker bear Winnie the Pooh (Jim Cummings). Fast forward through the decades, past boarding school and family tragedy and a tour of duty in World War II, and Christopher Robin (Ewan McGregor) is an adult with a wife named Evelyn (Hayley Atwell) and a daughter named Madeline (Bronte Carmichael), as well as an office job that keeps him away from both of them. When a deadline forces him to skip out on a weekend away with the family, a worn Christopher receives a visit from his old friend Pooh, who needs help finding the other animals in the Hundred Acre Wood.
