Fired State Department watchdog was probing Saudi arms sale, top House Democrat says

The Trump administration last year declared an emergency to fast-track a multi-billion dollar sale of weapons to Saudi Arabia, bypassing congressional review.
The head of the House Foreign Affairs Committee revealed Monday the recently ousted State Department inspector general was investigating Secretary of State Mike Pompeo’s decision to sell arms to Saudi Arabia last year without congressional review.
Congressman Eliot Engel, a Democrat from New York, said over the weekend he learned the inspector general, Steve Linick, had opened an investigation into Pompeo before his firing by President Trump late Friday. But on Monday, the House Foreign Affairs Committee chairman said he “learned that there may be another reason for Mr. Linick’s firing.”
“His office was investigating — at my request — Trump’s phony declaration of an emergency so he could send weapons to Saudi Arabia,” Engel said. “We don’t have the full picture yet, but it’s troubling that Secretary Pompeo wanted Mr.
