The Democrat-led House Foreign Affairs Committee on Tuesday announced a probe into a pre-recorded speech by Secretary of State Mike Pompeo to the Republican National Convention amid cries from Trump critics that it’s a grievous ethics violation. “Never in recent times has a president used the majesty of the White House to stage a nominating convention, nor has a sitting secretary of state participated in such a partisan event, much less from overseas where he is ostensibly on a diplomatic mission,” noted New York Times reporter Peter Baker This is not the first time the Trump administration, or Pompeo, has been accused of running afoul of the Hatch Act.
