John Boyega is opening up about the realities of being a Black man in the Star Wars universe. In a new interview with GQ, the actor dragged Disney for pushing his character, Finn, to the side, and he insisted that the franchise knows “fuck all” about how to include non-white actors. “I’m the only cast member who had their own unique experience of that franchise based on their race,” said Boyega. “It makes you angry with a process like that.” Boyega has spent the last five years in the Star Wars universe, but with the release of The Rise of Skywalker in late 2019, he’s ready to put the franchise in his rear-view mirror. The final film in the most recent trilogy received mixed reviews from critics and fans alike, and the actor is keenly aware of that fact. “It’s so difficult to maneuver,” he told GQ of the film’s legacy.
