Listen. I like Tom Holland. I’ve seen the Spider-Man movies. I’ve sung his praises in essays. I’ve watched the “Umbrella” lip-sync video more times than I care to admit. But never have I ever thought to myself, “I would love to see a visual representation of the inside of Tom Holland’s butthole.” And yet! Holland’s new film Cherry —which began streaming on Apple TV+ today—delivers precisely what nobody asked for: A brief but excruciating shot of Holland receiving an anal exam, filmed from the point of view of Holland’s rectum. It’s upsetting. It’s perplexing. It’s frankly the most uncomfortable three seconds of cinema I’ve witnessed this year. Here’s how it goes down: Holland stars as an unnamed protagonist who gets his heart broken by his college girlfriend, Emily (Ciara Bravo). Rather than deal with his feelings, Holland’s character enlists in the U.S. Army. Soon after, Emily changes her mind and wants to get back together, but Holland decides to give this whole Army thing a try anyways.
