Texas Gov. Greg Abbott signed into a law Wednesday a bill banning abortions as early as six weeks, before many women even know they are pregnant. The law makes abortion illegal if a heartbeat can be detected in an embryo, before it even reaches the scientific definition of a fetus at about 11 weeks after conception. “The life of every unborn child with a heartbeat will be saved from the ravages of abortion,” Abbott, a Republican, said in a bill signing at his office in the capital city of Austin. The law puts Texas in line with more than a dozen states that ban abortions after a so-called “fetal heartbeat” can be detected.
