Amid bridge blockade, Windsor protesters push to 'end all mandates'

Several protesters in Windsor brushed aside questions about the impact on automotive production in the U.S. and Canada, pointing to previous halts.
Windsor — Protesters demonstrating against Canada’s COVID-19 restrictions milled around on Huron Church Road in cold, rainy conditions Friday, talking in groups, waving signs and Canadian flags, and occasionally taking refuge in a nearby McDonald’s as the blockade of the Ambassador Bridge by truck drivers stretched into a fifth day and the country’s courts weighed an injunction against the standoff. Occasional shouts of “Hey, hey! Ho, ho! Justin Trudeau’s got to go,” sounded, echoing sentiments written on signs against Canda’s prime minister. Music played in the background as protesters huddled near parked vehicles — mostly passenger vehicles and several semi trucks — and under tents. “Peace for all. End all mandates,” was the message scrawled across a trailer attached to a pickup truck. “End goerment (sic) corruption,” was the message on the cab of a semi truck parked at the site. More: Ontario officials to fine, jail protesters in Ambassador Bridge blockade Among the demonstrators Friday afternoon was Kimberley Kroeker,31, of Kingsville, Ontario, who identified herself as a healthcare worker and said she was there to protest the pandemic restrictions because of their impact on Canada’s economy and society. She held a sign declaring: “Sickness has and will always be a risk of life.” “I’m here because this economy in this country has been disrupted for the last two years,” she said.
