For many years now, it has been clear that there was a prohibitive price to pay by U.S. Soccer for continuing a lawsuit against its most popular and successful team. Moreover, there’d be no winning, even if the federation managed to come out on top of one skirmish or another in the courts. Most of all, a number clearly existed that would end the battle altogether. Tuesday morning, it was announced that number had been reached, with U.S. Soccer and the USWNT Players Association agreeing to a $24 million back payment, along with a plan going forward that truly equalizes pay out of all friendlies and tournaments, including World Cups, going forward. Those of us who have covered this story for the duration received something new: a joint statement from players and federation alike, this alone a jarring change.
