'Genocide': Biden Uses the Word for First Time to Describe War in Ukraine

President Joe Biden appeared to call Russia’s invasion of Ukraine a “genocide,” for the first time labeling the increasingly bloody conflict as a grave crime against humanity. Biden made the comment Tuesday in Iowa while announcing new initiatives to lower the cost of energy, which has skyrocketed following Russia’s attack against Ukraine. The president, who has previously walked back remarks on Russia, now joins others who have said Russia’s aggression amounts to genocide. “Your family budget, your ability to fill up your tank—none of it should hinge on whether a dictator declares war and commits genocide a half a world away,” Biden said at an event in Menlo, Iowa. During his speech, Biden touted actions his administration is taking to tame record inflation and gas prices.
