It seems that the White House’s smile-and-wave approach with autocrats supplants calling out the discarding of human rights.
For decades, what has generated a sense of excitement in politics is the slogan, “It’s the economy, stupid.” The phrase inspires many electoral campaigns as it’s supposedly the economy that trumps (for want of a better term) a raft of other everyday issues affecting voters. However, a new tagline could be adept at explaining today’s climate, although not one for the faint-hearted anti-woke, and it goes something like … “It’s 2022, stupid.”
Promising to tackle economic constraints is of course crucial when attracting swing voters, but so too is championing the diversifying and continued open-mindedness of our communities. It’s the latter that is always left by the wayside, however, evident amid the controversy surrounding Qatar hosting the soccer World Cup. Qatar’s autocratic monarchy has an abhorrent record of widespread discrimination toward its LGBTQ+ community, with incessant imprisonment and torture.
